Three Simple DIY Steps to Troubleshoot a Water Heater Problem

1. No Hot Water

Check the energy source. If the water heater is electric, is the breaker still on or did it flip? If you have a gas water heater, is the gas pilot still lit?

2. Not Enough Hot Water

Check the thermostat to see what temperature it is set at. Mark recommends that the water heater be set to 120 degrees.

3. Funny Noises

Listen to your water heater for crackling. If you hear it, there is a good chance your elements are corroding and need to be replaced.

If you try these DIY troubleshooting techniques and the problem still persists, give us a call.

How do I know when my water heater is going bad?

You might start noticing one of the following:

What is the average life span of a water heater?

A water heater should last anywhere from 8 to 12 years. It’s not unusual to get a decade or more out of a water heater, but the life span can be affected by the quality of the unit, the water quality, and maintenance. Annual maintenance, such as draining the tank to flush out sediment, can help keep it running longer and more efficiently.
